Executive Summary
Glass Flooring Systems designed and supplied a fully integrated exterior structural glass system for a private lakefront residence on Lake Mendota, Wisconsin — comprising a 51-foot structural glass deck spanning three custom sections, an L-shaped exterior glass staircase with UV-bonded risers and titanium-embedded fasteners, and a second-story glass balcony. The three systems were engineered as one cohesive exterior glass environment — creating a transparent elevated terrace that preserves expansive views of Lake Mendota while delivering natural light to the spaces below. Each component was precisely fabricated to integrate with the supporting steel framework, maintain consistent panel alignment across levels, and withstand Wisconsin’s demanding year-round exterior climate. Installed by glazing contractor Architectural Expressions.
The Challenge
Project Overview
This contemporary lakefront residence required a structural glass exterior system designed to complement the home’s modern architecture while maximizing transparency and preserving the surrounding lake views at every level. The scale and complexity of the project — three interconnected glass systems spanning the full rear façade — demanded precise coordination across decks, staircases, railings, and balcony elements to achieve a seamless, unified result.
Key Constraints
- Engineer a fully structural glass deck system capable of supporting residential live loads across three sections — including a custom-shaped unit (Unit B) — spanning 51 feet across the rear of the residence
- Deliver maximum transparency throughout — the glass deck, staircase, and balcony all needed to minimize visual obstruction and allow daylight to reach the patio and rooms below
- Integrate an L-shaped exterior glass staircase connecting the elevated deck to the lawn — with dual steel stringers, UV-bonded risers, and titanium-embedded fasteners for a refined floating appearance
- Coordinate a second-story glass balcony (Unit D) as part of the same system — maintaining consistent glass specification, frame type, and aesthetic language across all elements
- Apply NanoDot® anti-slip texture to all walkable surfaces — essential for year-round exterior use in Wisconsin’s climate, including wet and winter conditions
- Fabricate all panels to precise tolerances to integrate with the supporting steel structure and maintain consistent elevations, panel alignment, and drainage across levels
Why This Mattered
A lakefront residence of this caliber demands that every exterior element earn its place — structurally, aesthetically, and functionally. The glass deck, staircase, and balcony were not designed as three separate elements but as one continuous architectural language: a transparent exterior skin that opens the home to the lake while maintaining the integrity of the steel structure beneath. The precision of fabrication and coordination required across three systems simultaneously is among the most technically complex residential exterior glass projects Glass Flooring Systems has completed.

Our Solution
System 1: Structural Glass Deck — 3 Sections
Glass Flooring Systems designed and supplied a fully structural glass deck system spanning three custom units across 51 feet — Units A, B, and C — fabricated to integrate precisely with the supporting steel framework and create a continuous elevated terrace. Unit B is a custom-shaped panel to accommodate the geometry of the building’s rear façade. All units use the SkyDeck perimeter and modified recessed interior frame with I-rafters.
Frame & Structure — Deck
- SkyDeck perimeter frame with modified recessed interior and I-rafter substructure
- Three custom-fabricated sections: Unit A (rectangular), Unit B (custom shape — four-sided), Unit C (rectangular)
- Custom-fabricated panel dimensions across all three units
Glass Specification — Deck & Balcony
- Low-iron triple-laminated tempered glass with DG structural interlayers
- Back-painted glass along the perimeter for a crisp, clean appearance — conceals framing and delivers a refined finish
- Engineered for exterior residential pedestrian live loads and year-round weather exposure
System 2: L-Shaped Exterior Glass Staircase
The L-shaped exterior glass staircase connects the elevated deck to the lawn below — with dual steel stringers, glass treads with titanium-embedded fasteners, UV-bonded risers, a glass landing, and coordinating glass railings. The staircase is fabricated to the same glass specification as the deck, maintaining a unified visual language across the full exterior system.
Glass Specification — Stair Treads
- Low-iron triple-laminated tempered glass with DG structural interlayers
- Titanium-embedded fasteners — structural point fixings for tread-to-stringer connection, creating a clean, luxurious aesthetic
- UV-bonded glass risers — clean, minimally detailed connection delivering a floating appearance
Glass Specification — Stair Landing
- Low-iron triple-laminated tempered glass with DG structural interlayers
- Titanium-embedded fasteners — consistent with stair tread specification
- Back-painted glass along the perimeter for a crisp, clean appearance consistent with the deck panels
System 3: Second-Story Glass Balcony — Unit D
Unit D is a second-story glass balcony supplied as part of the same integrated exterior glass system — using the SkyDeck perimeter frame with I-rafters and the same low-iron triple-laminated glass specification as the deck. The balcony delivers unobstructed lake views and visual continuity with the deck and staircase below.
Glass Railings — All Systems
- Ultra-Low-Iron Eurowhite® NG dual laminated glass panels with SentryGlas® interlayer — for all deck, staircase, and balcony railings
- Mounted with black powder-coated Giotto stand-offs — manufactured from AISI 316 stainless steel and fully adjustable for precise alignment during installation
- Frameless glass railing system — minimal visual obstruction, maximum transparency to the lake views
Anti-Slip Surface: NanoDot®
All walkable glass surfaces — deck panels, stair treads, and balcony — are finished with NanoDot® anti-slip texture — a virtually invisible micro-texture providing ANSI A326.3 DCOF-compliant slip resistance in both wet and dry conditions. NanoDot® was selected for its combination of optical invisibility and safety performance — essential for an exterior residential deck exposed to rain, dew, and winter conditions in Wisconsin year-round.
- ANSI A326.3 Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF) tested — the only nationally recognized anti-slip standard in the U.S.
- Tested using BOT-3000E tribometer — wet and dry conditions

In-House Engineering, Drafting & Design
The Lake Mendota project required our engineering and drafting teams to work across three structurally independent systems simultaneously — the 51-foot glass deck, the L-shaped exterior staircase, and the second-story balcony — all of which had to integrate with the same supporting steel framework without conflict. The deck alone presented a significant dimensional challenge: Unit B is a custom four-sided shape that could not be derived from a standard rectangular panel layout, and every dimension had to be calculated and drafted individually to ensure it aligned precisely with Units A and C and with the surrounding steel structure at every edge. Our engineering team specified the glass laminate stack — low-iron triple-laminated tempered with DG structural interlayers — to meet the combined demands of exterior residential live loads and Wisconsin’s year-round climate, where freeze-thaw cycling, snow accumulation, and prolonged sub-zero temperatures are annual realities, not edge cases. For the staircase, the dual steel stringer configuration and the L-shaped geometry required separate structural coordination: tread dimensions, landing dimensions, and stringer spans were each individually calculated and drawn to ensure the titanium-embedded fastener positions aligned correctly with the steel structure at every step. The black powder-coated standoff specification for the railings was coordinated across all three systems to maintain a consistent finish language throughout. All fabrication drawings, frame integration details, and project-specific documentation were produced in-house before manufacturing began.
“As the owner of Architectural Expressions, I have had the opportunity to install several impressive systems from Glass Flooring Systems, and their products have consistently stood out for their quality, engineering, and attention to detail.
Our work with their products has included a two-story glass deck with glass stairs and a glass balcony, a two-story glass staircase at Mercedes-Benz of Atlanta South, and multiple applications including walkable skylights and an interior glass floor. Each project had its own challenges, but Glass Flooring Systems provided the technical support, shop drawings, and product documentation needed to help move the work forward smoothly.
What sets them apart is how complete and well-prepared their systems are when they arrive on site. The components are thoughtfully organized, the systems are designed for real-world installation, and their ICC-approved products help support the approval process by verifying that the systems meet applicable safety and building code requirements.
Glass Flooring Systems is a strong partner for complex architectural glass projects, and we would highly recommend them to anyone looking for high-quality walkable glass systems backed by knowledgeable support.”
