Glass Railing FAQs
Do you provide complete railing systems?
Yes. Glass Flooring Systems provides complete glass railing systems that include glass, hardware, shop drawings, engineering support when required, and project coordination. We are more than a glass supplier: we provide coordinated railing systems designed to integrate cleanly with stairs, balconies, decks, terraces, rooftops, and surrounding architectural finishes.
Do you offer bent or curved glass railings?
Yes. We offer custom bent and curved glass railing options for projects requiring a more custom architectural look, including staircases, balconies, terraces, overlooks, and feature railings where standard flat panels don’t achieve the desired design.
Curved glass railings require additional planning for radius, panel sizing, glass makeup, hardware compatibility, and installation alignment. Our team reviews your design, advises on feasibility, and coordinates the details for a clean, refined finished system.
Do your glass railing systems meet my local building codes?
Yes, our glass railing systems are designed to meet applicable code and performance requirements based on the specific project location, application, and mounting condition. Because building codes vary by state, municipality, occupancy type, and project use, each system is reviewed against the specific local requirements for that project. We provide the documentation and technical support needed for code review, permitting, and approval.
Do you provide drawings for permits and inspections?
Yes. We provide shop drawings for every glass railing systems and offer additional services for engineering and stamped documentation where required. These drawings clarify glass make-ups, hardware locations, mounting conditions, attachment details, and overall system layout for permitting, approvals, and inspections.
Do I need a top cap on the railing?
Top cap requirements vary by project. Building codes generally require structural glass guards to have an attached top rail or handrail. However, a capless glass railing may be permitted when it uses laminated glass with at least two equal-thickness plies of the same glass type and the complete railing system meets applicable structural and safety requirements.
Under Section 2407.1.2 of the 2021 IBC, structural glass guards generally require an attached top rail or handrail. An exception may allow a capless system when the panels:
- Are laminated glass.
- Contain at least two glass plies of equal thickness.
- Use the same glass type for each ply.
- Are designed and tested as a complete railing system.
- Receive approval from the engineer and local building official.
Requirements vary by project location, building type, mounting system, and locally adopted code. Final approval should always be confirmed by the project engineer and local building official. For stairs and ramps, a separate graspable handrail may still be required even when a top cap is not.
Our team reviews each application to determine whether a top cap is needed.
How do I clean and maintain the glass?
Glass railings are easy to maintain with regular cleaning. Use a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge with a mild glass cleaner or a mixture of water and gentle soap. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or cleaners that could damage glass coatings, hardware finishes, or surrounding materials.
For exterior railings, rinsing away salt, pollen, dust, and debris regularly can help keep the glass and hardware looking clean, especially in coastal or high-exposure environments.
How wide can my glass railing panels be?
Glass panel width depends on several factors, including glass thickness, glass makeup, mounting system, wind loads, railing height, hardware type, site conditions, and local code requirements. Larger panels may be possible, but they need to be evaluated as part of the complete system.
Our team can help determine appropriate panel sizes based on your project and desired layout.
What type of glass are your railings made of?
At Glass Flooring Systems, we use EUROWHITE® NG low-iron glass by Euroglas. Its ultra-low iron content helps eliminate the green tint commonly found in standard glass, delivering industry leading 91% visable light transmittance. The result is the cleanest, brightest, and most refined glass option available for luxury architectural spaces.
Do you provide laminated glass railings?
Yes. We provide laminated tempered glass railing systems using safety glass assemblies designed for structural performance, clarity, and code compliance. Interlayers include SentryGlas® or Trosifol® UltraClear High Adhesion Interlayers, selected for strength, performance, and clarity — essential for structural railing systems where strength, safety, and aesthetics all need to work together.
Why are laminated glass railings safer to use than standard tempered glass?
Laminated glass is safer than tempered glass for railings because it retains its structure after breakage.
We use only laminated tempered glass with SentryGlas® or Trosifol® UltraClear High Adhesion Interlayers in our railing systems for this enhanced safety, post-breakage retention, and structural performance.
Under the International Building Code (IBC), glass used in guards and railings is generally required to be laminated safety glass made with fully tempered or heat-strengthened glass plies. The glazing must also meet applicable safety-glazing standards, such as CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Category II or ANSI Z97.1 Class A.
Monolithic tempered glass is not typically permitted for guardrails because, if it breaks, the entire panel can fall away from the opening. Laminated glass uses an interlayer that holds the broken glass together, providing important post-breakage retention and helping the panel remain in place as a protective barrier.
There are limited code exceptions that may allow monolithic fully tempered glass where there is no walking surface below the railing or where the area below is permanently protected from falling glass.
For frameless glass railing systems without a top rail, additional testing may be required to demonstrate that the laminated glass remains in place after impact or breakage. Final glass thickness, composition, hardware, anchoring, and load requirements should always be determined by the project-specific engineering and applicable local building code.
What is your standard glass thickness for railings?
Glass thickness is determined per project, based on railing type, mounting system, panel size, height, location, and code requirements. Many glass railing systems use tempered laminated glass assemblies, but the exact makeup is selected for the specific project conditions. Our team determines the proper glass thickness and makeup for your railing system.

What is the right mounting solution for me?
The right mounting solution depends on your project’s design goals, structural conditions, glass layout, and desired finished look. Glass Flooring Systems offers several refined mounting options, including shoe mounts, stand-offs, and spigots, each suited for different applications.
Shoe mounts provide clean, continuous support and are commonly used for balconies, terraces, decks, rooftops, and long railing runs — top-mounted, side-mounted, or recessed for a more minimal appearance.
Stand-offs mount the glass from the side for a sleek, architectural, floating-glass look, and are ideal for stairs and balconies. Our Giotto stand-offs add precise adjustability for cleaner final alignment.
Spigots offer a minimal, low-profile mount that keeps the base of the railing visually open — often used for modern frameless glass railings where reducing visible hardware matters most.
Our team reviews your drawings, structure, code requirements, and aesthetic goals to recommend the best mounting solution for your glass railing system.
Where is your mounting hardware made?
Our mounting hardware is made in Italy and selected for its precision, durability, and refined architectural finish— among the finest Italian-made hardware in the glass railing industry. Designed for strength and performance required for luxury residential and commercial applications.
Top-mounted vs. in-floor vs. side base shoe: which is right for me?
The best base shoe option depends on the look you want, the structure available for attachment, and the project conditions.
Top-mounted base shoe is installed on top of the finished surface and is often used when access from above is preferred.
In-floor base shoe is recessed into the floor for a cleaner, more minimal appearance. This option is often selected for luxury spaces where the lowest-profile look is desired.
Side-mounted base shoe attaches to the face of a slab, stair, balcony, or deck edge. This can help maximize usable walking space and create a clean frameless look.
Our team can help compare these options based on your project, structure, drainage, finishes, and design goals.
